PA and Philadelphia leaders gathered on Monday to denounce the record-breaking government shutdown and its effects on vital programs like SNAP, which is now seeing an influx of unpaid federal workers.

The state legislator is launching a bid for mayor in the 2019 Democratic primaries, his second run at the position, against incumbent Mayor Jim Kenney.
“Our administration is committed to bridging the divide between government and the residents of Philadelphia,” Mayor Kenney said in a press release.

Drug overdoses were the third leading cause of death in Philadelphia in 2017, behind heart disease and cancer. Most drug overdoses in the city were opioid-related - such deaths rose by 46 percent over the previous year, to 59 per 100,000 people.

With efforts officially extended through the end of June now, the next major scheduled milestone is the clearing out of the Emerald Street encampment, expected to be carried out by Jan. 15.
“This project not only helps Philadelphia demonstrate leadership on climate action, but it also makes good economic sense and helps to boost regional job growth in the renewable energy sector,” said Mayor Jim Kenney in a press release.

As the Trump administration turns its back on the scientific consensus surrounding climate change and its consequences, Philly and PA are working to address the issue.
